The carers’ movement started when Mary Webster, founder, contacted newspapers highlighting the difficulties faced when working and caring for ageing parents back in 1963 this then led to the formation of National Council for the Single Women and her Dependents in 1965. Since then there has been various policy changes in benefits, as well as the term ‘Carer’ being formally recognised and historical moments within the caring community the most recent being in 2014 when carers were given equal rights as the people they care for under the care act.
